Master Color Swap

There are many factors involved in the selection and manipulation of colors within a piece of art. Each piece has its own demands and an entire body of work, taken together, will illustrate the artist’s predilection for certain colors, combinations, and juxtapositions.

Your first task is to research images from art history. Choose two images from different artists. Select images in which the palette of colors differs strongly. The chosen images do not need to be of the same subject matter. You may have a portrait and a still life, for example. Take a color inventory of these two works. Make swatches for dominant colors in the composition.

During the first step, you will become familiar with the colors in each work. In the second part of this project, you are to swap the palettes. You’ll see how color choice can alter an image – how it can change the psychological tone of the piece.

Obtain quality reproductions. Follow the same procedures as for Painting 1 transcriptions.
