Expanding monotype techniques with lift ground

This is a stub of a post, to be fleshed out soon.

Painting and drawing techniques, common in monotype, can be employed in intaglio prints through offset printing and lift ground technique. For more on the lift ground, see this post.

Monotype offset

Here we have energetic brushwork monoprinted from the slab, the ink from that print being offset to a plate. The ink resists an aqueous ground, allowing the ink to be lifted away to expose the metal for etching.

Trace monotype offset

Many artists use variations on tracing transfer. Most of us have used carbon/graphite paper to transfer a drawing. In a trace monotype, you ink a slab, then draw on the backside of your print that is laid face down onto that slab. The pressure of your pencil causes the ink to be picked up in your print. Here, we’re just taking that one step further by offsetting that ink from the paper onto an etching plate. That ink will resist an aqueous ground and lift away before the plate is etched.

Note that all the paint and ink used here is oil based. Water soluble or water miscible oils will not work.
